The Orioles have activated RHP Jim Johnson from the disabled list and demoted RHP Armando Gabino to AAA Norfolk. Jason Berken was transferred from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL.
Johnson hasn’t pitched for the Orioles since April 30th when he was sent down to AAA Norfolk after compiling a 6.51 ERA over 9.2 innings with 9 strikeouts and 4 walks. Soon after his demotion it was found that he had a slight tear in his shoulder and he missed the next three months. Over the last three weeks hes been rehabbing with the O’s minor league affiliates. Between AAA Norfolk, AA Bowie, A+ Frederick, and GCL Orioles he had a 3.46 ERA with 12 strikeouts and one walk over 13 innings. It would be a great boost for the bullpen now and in the future if Johnson could get back to his 2008 and early 2009 form. Hopefully the shoulder was the reason for most of his struggles and he can put it behind him now but only time will tell. Gabino’s first taste of the majors with the Orioles was a failure. He three homeruns over 4.2 innings en route to a 13.50 ERA with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks. He looks like a AAAA player at this point and I don’t expect to see him back with the O’s unless its some kind of emergency.
