O’s Gut Out 6-3 Victory

Jeremy Guthrie received his 6th win of the year. George Sherrill got his 16th save.

It wasn’t easy for Guthrie. He had to battle while he was in the game and it all started in the 1st inning. Back to back singles to lead off the game for the Nats was followed by a walk to load the bases. Then another walk to score a run. Then a strikeout. But then another walk to score a run. Guts got the double play ball to escape the jam. Then in the 4th inning a leadoff double scored later on a single. Guthrie gave up those 3 runs in 5 innings with those 3 walks and 5 hits. Brian Bass came in to start the 6th and couldn’t record an out before loading the bases on 2 walks and a double. But Albers did a great job not allowing a run to score. He got a force out at home followed by a double play. Jim Johnson shut down the Nat’s bats in the 7th and 8th, then Sherrill closed it out in a scoreless 9th. Those two have been fantastic lately, with 2.39 and 2.05 ERAs respectively.

The O’s brought the long ball to the yard last night with three altogether. Greg Zaun hit his 3rd of the year in the bottom of the 2nd, a solo shot. Hes really been hitting the ball good since being demoted to back up duty. I guess the old man needs his rest. In the 5th, Nolan Riemold crushed a 3-run shot after singles by Adam Jones and Aubrey Huff. It was his 9th of the season. Then in the 7th, Aubrey Huff hit a solo shot, his 10th, to pad the lead some more. A Brian Roberts sacrifice fly finished out the scoring. We must love playing against the Nationals. Every team probably does.

Player of the game: Aubrey Huff (2-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, HR (10) (.275 AVG))

Its time to get out the brooms today. David Hernandez (1-1, 3.95) makes his return from the minors in an attempt to sweep the Nationals against John Lannon (4-5, 3.44).
