O’s Continue Failure On West Coast; Lose 5-2

Jeremy Guthrie gets the loss, his 8th.

Guthrie actually pitched better than his line would suggest. He just continues to give up too many homeruns, they’re really hurting him this year. Last year it seemed like every homer he gave up was a solo shot. Not this year. Well, OK, the first run he gave up was on a solo HR by Bobby Abreu in the 4th inning. But in the 5th inning he gave up a 3 run homerun to the same Bobby Abreu from the inning before. He had already given up a run on a triple, a walk, and a single before that. He ended up going  7 innings though, not giving up any more runs. At least he was able to rest the bullpen. Chris Ray pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up back to back singles to start the 8th.

The hitting was again mediocre at best. The west coast must really put a damper on our bats. We managed 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk. We scored on a Matt Wieters single and a Luke Scott solo HR. Aubrey Huff, Nolan Riemold, and Robert Andino each had a single. Ty Wiggington recorded a walk. John Lackey pitched a great game. That seems to be a trend lately. We’ve really been facing some very good pitching over the last few weeks. I’d like to see us turn things around a little before the all-star break.

Player of the game: Luke Scott (1-4, solo HR (16) (.298 AVG))

David Hernandez (1-2, 4.19) makes his 2nd start since being promoted against Ervin Santana (1-3, 7.47), who is making his return from his 2nd trip to the DL.
