9th Inning Walkoff Beats O’s 6-5

Danys Baez is now 4-5 on the season with the loss.

The offense scored 5 runs in the first inning. It looked like it was going to be a lopsided victory for the Orioles, but they didn’t score another run for the rest of the game. Brian Roberts led off with his 9th homerun. Nolan Reimold, Adam Jones, and Nick Markakis hit back to back to back singles to load the bases. Aubrey Huff grounded out, but a run scored to make it 2-0. Ty Wiggington doubled to make it 3-0, followed by a Luke Scott double to make it 5. The Orioles batted around, but weren’t able to make Justin Verlander pay for that first inning. We only had 3 hits in the rest of the game and Verlander managed to go 8 innings. Roberts added another single, Huff chipped in two of his own, and Scott drew a walk.

Chris Tillman came out in the first and gave 3 runs right back. But he was able to settle down and only allow 2 over the next 5 innings. His final line was 6 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 K. He did give up another homerun in the 5th inning, but it looks like hes starting to settle in. This start was better than his first, hopefully his next start is better than this one. Cla Meredith pitched a scoreless 7th. He continues to be really effective since coming over from the Padres. If he can keep his strikeout rate up, he could be really good for us. Danys Baez came in and got through the 8th inning with no problem, but with 2 outs in the 9th he served up a walk off homerun to Clete Thomas, who has owned the Orioles this year.

Player of the game: Brian Roberts (2-4, R, RBI, HR (9) (.287 AVG))

Another exciting night tonight as Brian Matusz (0-0, -.–) , the Orioles 1st round draft pick in 2008, makes his major league debut. I expect him to hit the ground running. Alot of people say he should be our best pitcher right out of the gate. He’s supposed to be polished for a rookie. Newly acquired Jarrod Washburn (8-6. 2.64) pitches for the Tigers.
