Matusz Impressive In 8-2 Win

Brian Matusz gets the win in his debut, the 5th Oriole to do so this year.

The first round draft pick from last year was impressive, showing off his full repertoire of pitches. Hes got a fastball, slider, curveball, and two different changeups. He struggled a little bit in his first game in the big leagues, but thats to be expected. But he showed mental toughness by being able to get out of a few jams. He ended up going 5 innings giving up 1 run on 6 hits and 3 walks. He had 5 strikeouts, including two back to back to end the 5th inning. Chris Ray came in for the 6th and he showed that he might have regained his old form. He ended up throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball, just giving up a hit and a walk while striking out 2 batters. Matt Albers got the last 4 outs to give the Orioles the win, but not before giving up a run.

The offense did its part to give the rookie the win. Brian Roberts led off the game with a double, his 38th. Nick Markakis would single him in to give the O’s an early 1-0 lead. It was 2-0 after a Matt Wieters RBI single in the 2nd, and Cesar Izturis muscled up to hit his 2nd homerun in the 5th making it 3-1. We broke out a bit in the 6th. Nolan Reimold started the inning with a walk and scored on a Markakis homerun. Aubrey Huff was hit by a pitch, Ty Wiggington singled, and Wieters walked to load the bases. Izturis came through again, this time with a 2 RBI single to make it 7-1. A Melvin Mora RBI single in the 7th gave us our 8th and final run. It was an exciting game to be an Orioles fan. In fact, this is an exciting time. A lot of the ‘cavalry’ has arrived. Now we get to watch them get their feet wet for 2 months before hopefully carrying us into contention from here on out.

Player of the game: Nick Markakis (3-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, double (33), HR (13) (.300 AVG))

Jeremy Guthrie (7-10, 5.37) tries to get back on track tonight, while the Orioles try to payback Edwin Jackson (7-5, 2.64) for shutting them out earlier in the year.
