Hernandez Struggles In 7-3 Loss

David Hernandez fell to 3-4 with the loss.

So Hernandez had his first really bad start. It was bound to happen sooner or later. He could only last 3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks. He had an easy 1st inning, but gave up 4 runs in the 2nd and another in the 3rd. Everybody struggles at some point in the majors, hopefully he can make the necessary adjustments and improve from here. Brian Bass came in and worked 3 innings of his own. He was better than Hernandez, but still not all that good. He gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. Danys Baez and Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless inning each.

The offense did the opposite of what it usually does. We couldn’t get anything going early on, but put together 3 runs later in the game. In the 5th inning, the forgotten Felix Pie drove in Ty Wiggington with an RBI single. I’m hoping Pie gets more playing time down the stretch. Hes been good since that first month, but nobody can seem to look past that. I’d start him 2 or 3 times a week against right handed starters. Hes proven he can’t hit lefties throughout his minor and major league career, but he has a much better line against right handers. We scored again in the 6th when Wiggington doubled to drive in a run. Our last run came in the 8th on an Aubrey Huff RBI single. Matt Wieters was robbed of extra bases in the 7th, but made up for it in the 9th with a double down the right field line.

Player of the game: Ty Wiggington (2-4, R, RBI, double (14) (.267 AVG))

I’ll be away without internet access over the weekend, but the Orioles travel into Canada to face the Blue Jays in a three game series. I’ll post a series recap when I return on Sunday night.

Game 1: Jason Berken (1-9, 6.93) vs. Ricky Romero (10-4, 3.53)
Game 2: Chris Tillman (0-0, 6.75) vs. Brett Cecil (5-1, 4.36)
Game 3: Brian Matusz (1-0, 1.80) vs. Roy Halladay (11-5, 2.75)
