Hernandez Shines, O’s Win 3-2

David Hernandez evened his record at 4-4 with the win. Jim Johnson recorded his 4th save.

Hernandez was in a groove all night. He made two bad pitches which were both hit for solo homeruns, but other than that he was pitching his best professional game. He pitched into the 7th inning and set his career high in strikeouts with 6. In 6.2 innings he gave up those 2 runs on 6 hits and a walk. We’ll be in great shape if he pitches like that most times out. Matt Albers came in and walked a batter before getting out of the 7th and keeping Hernandez in line for the win. Danys Baez pitched a perfect 8th before new closer Jim Johnson recorded the save with a scoreless 9th.

It was nice to win a close game for a change, although Brian Roberts almost blew it for us. Despite having a great night at the plate, Roberts made a few outs on the basepaths that could’ve cost us the game. In the 3rd, he was thrown out at home with no outs on a ball hit right at the second baseman with the infield drawn in. And in the 5th, he was doubled off of second base after Nick Markakis popped out to third base because he thought there were 2 outs. Luckily we were able to survive those outs we handed to the A’s. In the 2nd inning, Nolan Reimold pretty much single handily scored our first run. He singled up the middle, stole 2nd base, moved up to third on a ground out to the right side of the infield, and scored when Melvin Mora check swing grounded out to first base. An RBI single by Roberts scored our second run in the 5th, which was followed by an RBI ground out by Adam Jones. Markakis had two hits in the game. Chad Moeller and Cesar Izturis each had a single.

Player of the game: Brian Roberts (3-4, RBI, 2 SB (23), double (39) (.286 AVG))

The O’s try to win the series this afternoon with Jason Berken (2-9, 6.72) on the mound. Fellow rookie Vin Mazzaro (3-8, 5.70) goes for the A’s.
