Offense Doesn’t Carry Over In 5-1 Loss

Brian Matusz gets the loss, his 2nd.

Matusz had one bad inning, but otherwise pitched good. He gave up 5 runs in the 3rd (4 were earned). He got through the inning and ended up going 5.2 innings altogether. He struck out 7 batters but walked 3 and gave up 11 hits. Hes been through alot this season, but this can only help him prepare for next year. Cla Meredith came in with runners on 2nd and 3rd, hit Vlad Guerrero (possibly payback for throwing at Felix Pie earlier in the game?) to load the bases, but got out of the inning. He went on to pitch a scoreless 7th. Mark Hendrickson pitched a scoreless 8th and Jim Johnson a scoreless 9th.

We should’ve saved some of those runs from Friday for last night. After putting 16 on the board in the first game of the series, we could only manage to score one run. That came on an RBI double by Nick Markakis after Adam Jones had tripled. That was one of two hits Markakis had in the game and that RBI gives him 80 on the season. Brian Roberts hit yet another double to lead the world with 44. Melvin Mora had 3 hits in the game, a double among them. Nolan Reimold and Matt Wieters each had singles, Aubrey Huff and Felix Pie each contributed a walk.

Player of the game: Melvin Mora (3-4, double (13) (.264 AVG))

Game 3 of the 4 game set kicks off this afternoon. Jeremy Guthrie (7-12, 5.43) opposes Sean O’Sullivan (3-1, 5.12).
