Homeruns Kill O’s 3-1

Chris Tillman loses his first game to even up his record.

The homerun ruled the day in Tampa Bay last night. The Orioles only run came on a Brian Roberts homerun in the 8th. He also had a double in the game. Nolan Reimold and Melvin Mora had doubles, Felix Pie had a single, and Matt Wieters had 2 singles and a walk. Nick Markakis saw his on base streak come to an end. The Luke Scott at first base experiment isn’t off to a great start. He needs to learn that when a ball is off line, its ok to take your foot off the bag to go get it.

On the other side of things, all of the Rays runs came on homeruns as well. They had 3 solo shots, all off Chris Tillman. Thats already the second game of his career, spanning 5 starts, that hes given up 3 homeruns. Each one came on a first pitch fastball right down the middle. He’ll have to adjust, maybe learn from Matusz and start some at bats with his curve ball or changeup. But other than the homers, Tillman looked really good last night. He has the stuff to pitch at the top of a rotation, theres no doubt. He went 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, striking out 3. Cla Meredith pitched a scoreless 7th and Chris Ray a scoreless 8th to keep the Rays at three, but the bats came up short.

Player of the game: Brian Roberts (2-4, R, RBI, double (46), HR (11) (.291 AVG))

Its Brian Matusz’ (1-2, 6.75) turn to face the Rays for the first time tonight. He and the Orioles hitters will go up against Jake Shields (7-9, 3.88).
