Pettite Silences Bats; O’s Lose 5-1

W – Andy Pettite (12-6, 4.03) L – Jeremy Guthrie (9-13, 5.17) SV – Mariano Rivera (37)

Guthrie again pitched very well. Thats 3 games in a row now, a sign that the Guthrie of old has finally returned. Unfortunately for him, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk over 6 innings wasn’t enough with Pettite on the mound for the Yankees. Pettite carried a perfect game into the 7th inning and pretty much dominated the Oriole bats. Guthrie would’ve had to have thrown a shut out to get the win. Mark Hendrickson followed and battered around for 3 runs on 5 hits over 1.2 innings. Brian Bass pitched the last 1.1 innings, not allowing any runs.

Pettite’s perfect game ended in the 7th when Jerry Hairston made a fielding error on an Adam Jones ground ball. The no hitter ended with the next batter as Nick Markakis singled to left. Melvin Mora homered to lead off the 8th. It was his 6th homerun of the season. Brian Roberts walked to lead off the 9th and moved up to 2nd when Jones singled, but that was where it would end. You just have to tip your cap to the opponent in games like this, I don’t think there was anything we could’ve done.

Player of the game: Jeremy Guthrie (6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 2 K, L (9-13) (5.17 ERA))

David Hernandez (4-6, 4.24) will try to pick up where the starters left off last night, as will AJ Burnett (10-8, 4.10).
