September Call Ups: Round 1

The Orioles have called up OF Jeff Fiorentino, RHP Matt Albers, and LHP Alberto Castillo from AAA Norfolk and activated RHP Dennis Sarfate from the disabled list.

This is the first batch of call ups. We’re supposed to call up some more players on September 7th. The three relievers will give the Orioles some room to use the bullpen more freely. We have plans to go to a 6 man rotation and closely monitor the young pitcher’s innings for the rest of the season, so the more bullpen arms the better. Sarfate was eligible to return from his DL stint and rehab a couple weeks ago, but he allowed us to keep him on the disabled list until the rosters expanded. He got hit around a little on his rehab and had a 6.39 ERA in 12.2 IP with the O’s before getting hurt, it’ll be interesting to see how he fares over the next month.

Albers went down after struggling badly with the O’s a few weeks ago and really didn’t do any better while he was in AAA Norfolk. He gave up 10 hits, 6 runs, and 2 walks over 5.2 innings, while only striking out 3 batters.

Castillo was up for a cup of coffee earlier in the year and gave up a run over 2.1 innings. In AAA he had a 2.77 ERA over 52 innings with 54 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Fiorentino will give us another option in the outfield if we need it. He hit very well for Norfolk this season, especially considering its a hitters park in a hitters league. He batted .312/.387/.510 with 26 doubles, 5 triples, and 12 homeruns over 413 plate appearances. He had a 48/62 walk to strikeout ratio. I’d like to see him get some at bats while hes up here.
