Bullpen Blunders Lead To 9-6 Loss

W – Damaso Marte (1-1, 9.35) L – Chris Ray (0-3, 6.75) SV – Mariano Rivera (38)

David Hernandez started for the Orioles and he just didn’t have the command that he needs to be successful. He walked 6 batters and a had a wild pitch over 5 innings to go along with 4 hits and 5 runs. His stuff was good, evidenced by his 7 strikeouts, but without the control of his pitches he can only be so effective. Dennis Sarfate made his return. Unfortunately it wasn’t very good. He gave up a hit and walked a batter before being removed. Another recent roster addition, Alberto Castillo, came in and got two outs and against two lefties before being removed in favor of Chris Ray. That turned out to be the wrong decision to make because Ray allowed 5 hits, including back to back homeruns, and 3 runs to go along with a run being charged to Sarfate before getting out of the inning. Matt Albers made his return and , to my surprise, pitched very well. He went 2 innings without allowing a run to score. Cla Meredith pitched a scoreless 9th.

Felix Pie hit his 8th homerun in the bottom of the 1st inning to give the O’s the early lead. The kid is on fire. Something has clicked. I’m glad Andy MacPhail decided to hold on to him when everyone was clamoring to get rid of him a few months back. We scored two more runs in the 3rd when Melvin Mora singled in Nick Markakis and Nolan Reimold to tie the game at 3. After the Yankees scored 2 in the top of the 5th to give them the lead, Luke Scott crushed a 3 run homerun in the bottom of the inning to take it right back. It was his 21st of the year. Markakis, Reimold, and Mora each had 3 hits in the game. Mora had a double and Reimold also contributed a walk. Brian Roberts hit his 49th double.

Player of the game: Melvin Mora (3-4, 2 RBI, double (15) (.262 AVG))

The Orioles will try to avoid the sweep in the series finale. Jason Berken (4-11, 6.33) goes against AJ Burnett (10-8, 4.10).
