Another Blown Save; Walkoff 4-3 Loss

W – Jerry Blevins (2-0)     L – Jim Johnson (0-1)

It looked like things were finally going to turn around and the Orioles were going to win a close game. Jeremy Guthrie pitched good for the third consecutive start. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and a walk over 6.2 innings, striking out 3 batters. It looks like the Guthrie from a couple years ago is back which is good except for the fact that the O’s are 10 games under .500 after 11 games. Dave Trembley managed this game like it was the 7th game of the world series. He brought in Will Ohman after Guthrie got the first two batters out in the 7th inning but he walked both lefties that he faced. So Matt Albers was brought in and he got out of the inning. He also got the first out of the 8th before being taking out in favor of Mark Hendrickson with a left handed batter due up. He got the out but then Cla Meredith was called upon to get out the right handed batter that followed, which he did. Jim Johnson was brought on in the 9th to try to nail down the save but he was all over the place. He continues to show that he doesn’t have the mentality to be a closer in this league. The leadoff batter singled and was sacrificed over to second. Johnson struck out Rajai Davis but the pitch was wild and he was able to reach first safely as well as the other runner advancing to third. This was followed by another wild pitch allowing Davis to go to second. Daric Barton was intentionally walked to load the bases and then Ryan Sweeney drilled a single into right field to end the game. Maybe if Trembley would’ve saved some guys earlier in the game he could’ve taken Johnson out after he showed how wild and off his game he was. As I was following the game I was just waiting for us to find a way to lose and we did. This season is turning into a nightmare…

Even though we took a one run lead into the 9th, the offense was once again putrid. We got our first two runs to tie the game in the 6th on a bunt single, an error, and a walk to load the bases before Garrett Atkins hit a two run single. Miguel Tejada was the bunt single and he had to be taken out of the game with a leg injury after the play. He was 3-3 in the game and if we lose him to go along with Brian Roberts and Felix Pie we’re in serious trouble, if we weren’t already. We took the lead in the 8th when Cesar Izturis scored on a Ty Wiggington sacrifice fly after leading off the inning with a double and advancing to third on a Luke Scott groundout. Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, and Julio Lugo each had singles and Atkins had a second single in the game. We were once again terrible with runners in scoring position, going 1-9 in todays game. You have to wonder how much longer things can go on without a major change.

Player of the game: Jeremy Guthrie (6.2 IP, 6 H, ER, BB, 3 K (3.15 ERA))

Brian Matusz (0-1, 4.38) tries to keep the O’s from losing their 10th straight tomorrow afternoon. Hes up against Oakland’s ace Brett Anderson (1-0, 0.00) who has been pitching lights out so far this year. Plus hes left handed.
