Bergesen Demoted

The Orioles have sent RHP Brad Bergesen to AAA Norfolk and recalled LHP Alberto Castillo.

Bergesen was sent down following his start last night. It was the right move. He needs to figure out what hes doing wrong compared to last year because hes getting hit hard and often. Its better to figure things out in the less pressure atmosphere of the minor leagues. I’m sure the Orioles being ten games under .500 twelve games into the season was another reason for the quick demotion. Bergesen will enter Norfolk’s rotation, most likely pushing RHP Alfredo Simon to the bullpen for the time being. Alberto Castillo will come up to bolster the O’s bullpen. RHP Jason Berken appears to be the front runner to take over the 5th starters spot, but the Orioles won’t need someone to fill that role until Saturday May 1st. Berken (0-0, 1.50 ERA, 8 K, 12 IP) has been very good out of the bullpen so it depends if we want to take him out of that role or not. Another option could be RHP Jake Arreta whos gotten off to a good start for AAA Norfolk to the tune of a 0.50 ERA over 18 innings with 12 strikeouts and 9 walks. If it were up to me I would keep Berken in the bullpen and let Arrieta have a chance in the rotation. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out and how fast Bergesen earns his place back, if he ever does.
