Hughes Gets The Call

The Orioles have recalled 1B/OF Rhyne Hughes from AAA Norfolk and optioned INF Justin Turner back down to AAA.

This was a good move. Turner wasn’t getting much playing time and wasn’t doing much with the time he got while Hughes has been hot at AAA Norfolk and could provide a spark to the offense. He was hitting .353/.421/.667 with 5 doubles, a triple, 3 homeruns, and 11 RBI over 51 at bats for the Tide. Last year he combined to hit .279/.349/.506 with 35 doubles, 3 triples, 25 homeruns, and 79 RBI in 512 at bats between AA and AAA. Hes got power and patience at the plate with apparently solid defense at first base but not so much in the outfield. He should get a good amount of playing time between first base, left field, and DH since Garrett Atkins and Lou Montanez aren’t inspiring much confidence so far. Hughes is 26 years old and I think he can prove to be a valuable asset to the team as a bench player/pinch hitter/occasional starter at 1B or DH now and moving forward. The Orioles acquired him as a player to be named later when we sent C Gregg Zaun to Tampa Bay in August of last year. Turner will get to go back to Norfolk and play every day. He’ll get another chance down the line most likely. I still think he can be a decent bench player in the future. Kudos to Andy MacPhail for trying to inject some life into the team and not just standing pat.
