A Winning Streak! O’s Beat Yankees 5-4

W – Alberto Castillo (1-0)     L – David Robertson (0-1)     SV – Alfredo Simon (1)

I could get used to this. The Orioles won back to back games for the first time this season and the games were against the Red Sox and Yankees. We’re still 12 games under .500 but I like the way we’ve played over the last handful of games. We’re going to get healthy sooner or later. Maybe we can make a run at .500 by the end of the year. I know its only two games but see what happens when we win? We have optimism. Kevin Millwood started last nights game and only lasted 5.1 innings, but he was able to hold the Yankees to 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 batters. He continues to be consistent and calm under pressure. I like how he looks at the top of our rotation. Alberto Castillo came in in the 6th and gave up his first hit of the season, an infield single. But that was all he gave up over 1.2 innings, striking out 3. Hes been great since coming up from AAA Norfolk. Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless 8th and with a three run lead going into the 9th freshly called up Alfredo Simon came in to record the save. It wasn’t easy, he gave up 2 hits and a walk and let 2 runs score. But the inning should’ve ended when Cesar Izturis got a routine ground ball with two outs. But he couldn’t handle it and the inning continued. It looked like “here we go again” but Simon got Alex Rodriguez to ground out to end the game. He struck out two batters in the inning and flashed a 97 mph fastball and 90 mph slider. He could be around for a while.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes was excellent last night but the Orioles did a great job to work his pitch count so that he could only go 5.2 innings. In the 2nd inning Luke Scott and Ty Wiggington hit back to back singles (our only hits against Hughes) to lead it off. After Rhyne Hughes flew out to left field, Nolan Reimold walked to load the bases and then Cesar Izturis walked to score a run. Unfortunately Adam Jones grounded into a double play to end the inning. The offense was shut down until the 6th when we got a two out rally going after Hughes was removed from the game. Scott walked and Wiggington was hit by a pitch before Hughes lined a single into right to score a run. Reimold and Izturis each followed with RBI singles of their own before Jones again ended the inning, this time striking out. We tacked on an insurance run (turned out to be much needed) in the 8th. Derek Jeter made an error to start the inning, allowing Wiggington to reach first base. Julio Lugo pinch ran for Ty and stole second base before Izturis hit another RBI single. That turned out to be enough to win the game. Matt Wieters walked twice in the game and Jones hit his third double of the season.

Player of the game: Cesar Izturis (2-3, BB, 3 RBI (.259 AVG))

Dare we say a three game winning streak? We’ll find out tonight but our work will be cut out for us with New York’s ace CC Sabathia (2-1, 3.00) on the mound. The Orioles will counter with Jeremy Guthrie (0-2, 3.46).
