O’s Lose First Game Of Road Trip 4-1

W – CC Sabathia (4-1)     L – Jeremy Guthrie (0-4)     SV – Joba Chamberlain (1)

The Orioles came into last nights game on a roll but it wasn’t enough to beat CC Sabathia and the Yankees. Sabathia was on his A game, holding the Orioles to a run on 6 hits over 8 innings. Matt Wieters gave the O’s an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning with an opposite field homerun. It was his first homerun from the right handed side of the plate, he has two from the left side. Wieters also walked in the game. Nick Markakis walked and doubled, Garrett Atkins singled twice, Nolan Reimold doubled, and Miguel Tejada singled. Atkins continues to own Sabathia over his career, although it is still a very small sample size. His last four hits have come against CC and hes 7-12 off of him for his career. Lou Montanez took a walk but he continues to be a black hole in the lineup. Hes now batting .129 on the season. I think the Orioles just ran into a great pitcher throwing a great game last night. They’re going to have to get used to it because our next few games are all against good pitching.

Jeremy Guthrie was great for 6 of the 7 innings he pitched, but he gave up 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th and that was the ballgame. It was a two out rally that might’ve been avoided if Brian Roberts was playing second base. A-Rod led off with a single and moved to second base when Jorge Posada hit a hard ground ball towards second that Wiggington couldn’t handle. If he comes up cleanly with the ball its an easy double play but he dropped it and had to settle for the out at first base. The next two batters singled to tie the game and Randy Winn hit a three run homer to put the Yankees up for good. Wiggington made an error on the next play but it didn’t result in any more damage. Altogether Guthrie gave up those 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks over 7 innings while striking out a pair of batters. Cla Meredith pitched a perfect 8th, striking out a batter along the way. I’d like to see Meredith used like this more often because if hes only going to be coming in for a batter or two at a time hes wasting a spot in the bullpen who can pitch at least an inning. He still has an option left so they could send him down to AAA Norfolk without having to risk a player thats out of options like Matt Albers to waivers.

Player of the game: Matt Wieters – 1-3, BB, solo HR (3) (.289 AVG)

Its another rematch from last week tonight as Brian Matusz (2-1, 4.40) tries to get the Orioles back on the winning track against AJ Burnett (3-0, 2.43) and the Yankees.
