Scott Moore Gets The Call

The Orioles have recalled INF Scott Moore from AAA Norfolk and optioned LHP Alberto Castillo back down to the same club. 2B Justin Turner was designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster for Moore.

Early speculation was that 1B Michael Aubrey (.255/.322/.453, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 9 RBI) would be promoted before this weekend’s interleague series with the Washington Nationals, but instead Andy MacPhail went with infielder Scott Moore. Moore missed five games with a minor injury in the middle of May but on the season for AAA Norfolk he was batting .276/.324/.463 with 6 doubles, a triple, 5 HR, and 23 RBI in 123 at bats before getting the call. I don’t see much difference between the two offensively. Moore has more power while Aubrey would probably hit for a higher average. Defensively Aubrey is pretty good at first base while Moore is below average at all four infield positions but he has more versatility. I’m fine with this move as long as it means Garrett Atkins doesn’t see the field again. You can plug Moore in at first base or you can play him at second base while moving Ty Wiggington to first base where hes more comfortable. Luke Scott could also see time there. Either way it should improve the production coming out of first base. I don’t even know why we’re holding on to Atkins at this point, I’d bring up Aubrey also to replace him but I highly doubt that happens. Surprisingly Justin Turner was DFA’d. I would’ve just put Castillo on waivers or DFA’d Pedro Viola. No sense to risk losing Turner when there are other obvious options that wouldn’t be claimed. Turner was hitting .250/.319/.381 with 8 doubles, a HR, and 8 RBI in 84 at bats.
