2010 MLB Draft: Round 1

The Orioles selected HS SS Manny Machado out of Brito Prep School in Miami with the third overall pick in the MLB Amateur Draft.

Grade: A

Its hard not to love this pick with the lack of talent in the organization at the shortstop position. We drafted Mychal Givens in the second round last year as a shortstop but hes more of a project at this point plus hes hurt at the moment. Scouts all across the board are raving about Machado, most of them calling him a five tool player with even some comparisons to Alex Rodriguez coming out of high school. Listed at 6’2”, 180 pounds he has plenty of room to grow. His best asset is his hitting ability, he should be a .300 hitter at the major league level. He has a good arm, a good glove, and plenty of power potential. He may not be a speed threat as he grows into his frame that would limit him to a four tool player, but theres nothing wrong with that. He batted .639 with 27 doubles, 12 homeruns, 56 RBI, 43 runs, and 17 stolen bases in 29 games during the high school season. Hes being advised by Scott Boras so it could come down to the wire to sign him, but scouting director Joe Jordan doesn’t seem to think that that will be a problem. At the very least we actually have something to be excited about this season.

The Washington Nationals took HS C Bryce Harper with the first pick, which was a foregone conclusion from this time last year. With him and RHP Stephen Strasburg the Nationals could have a good thing going down the interstate. My personal favorite and the guy I was hoping the Orioles would get went to the Pittsburg Pirates with the second overall pick, HS RHP Jameson Taillon. He features a 99 mph fastball, an above average curve ball and slider, and a solid change up at the age of 18. Harper, Taillon, and Machado were the slam dunk top three with a bit of a drop off after that, so once the first two were off the board it made the Orioles pick a pretty easy one. We don’t pick again until tomorrow afternoon with the third pick of the third round since we lost our second round pick when we signed LHP Mike Gonzalez. Thats not looking like too good of a decision right now. Tonight will resolve the first, supplemental, and second rounds before starting back up tomorrow.
