Simon Activated At Bergesen’s Expense

The Orioles have activated RHP Alfredo Simon from the disabled list and optioned RHP Brad Bergesen to AAA Norfolk.

I was hoping we would designate Matt Albers for assignment instead but I guess they want to keep Bergesen in a starter’s role so hes ready to return to the rotation after Kevin Millwood is presumably traded. Bergesen only pitched in two games out of the bullpen giving up one run over 3.1 innings. He’ll try to get back into a groove pitching out of the Tide’s rotation. Simon comes off the disabled list from his hamstring injury without going on any rehab assignments. Based off of manager Juan Samuel’s quotes he’ll immediately resume the closers role where he left off. I’d rather see David Hernandez in that role but Simon did have some success before his injury with 6 saves and a 2.92 ERA over 12.1 innings with 10 strikeouts and 6 walks. I don’t know what it’ll take to get Albers (5.34 ERA) and Mark Hendrickson (6.34 ERA) off the team but we’ll be better off whenever it happens. Frank Mata was supposed to be the easy choice to remove when Simon came back but hes been good over his first 7 innings with a 1.29 ERA. The Orioles still have a ways to go before they’re even close to full strength again.
