Arrieta Falters In 9-4 Loss

W – Jon Garland (7-5)     L – Jake Arrieta (2-1)

Well Jake Arrieta’s third start didn’t go nearly as well as his first two. Thats the life of a rookie not named Strasburg. He just didn’t have much control yesterday, walking 3 batters in only 3 innings. He gave up a run in each of the first two innings and then four in the 3rd capped by a three run homer by Will Venable. Arrieta finished the inning but was pinch hit for in the top of the 4th inning to end his day. He gave up 6 runs on 5 hits and didn’t strike out a single batter. Mark Hendrickson pitched the middle three innings, giving up a run in the 5th. Frank Mata continued his decline after getting off to a pretty good start. He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits including a homerun in the 7th inning to raise his ERA to 6.52. With his performance hes made himself an easy choice for demotion when one of our hurt relievers gets healthy. Matt Albers pitched a perfect 9th.

The Orioles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning but that would wind up being the only runs we would score. Corey Patterson and Nick Markakis singled then Luke Scott walked to load the bases. Adam Jones hit a ground ball to the third baseman that should’ve been the end of the inning but he double clutched and it wound up as an RBI single. Matt Wieters cleared the bases with a double over the center fielder’s head to capitalize on the mistake, a rarity and the last time that would happen in this game. Patterson and Jones ended up with two hits a piece, Wieters walked, and maybe the only positive to his day – Jake Arrieta walked. Its a shame how quickly we gave up that big early lead and the air seemed to come out of the team once we did. Its just another feather in our cap of 50 losses. I never thought I’d see a team lose 50 games before winning 20..

Player of the game: Matt Wieters – 1-3, 3 RBI, BB, double (8) (.223 AVG)

Today is another day off as we fly home from the west coast. The Florida Marlins and Anibal Sanchez (6-4, 3.22) come into town on Tuesday night. The Orioles will send Jeremy Guthrie (3-8, 3.97) to the mound.
