O’s Win In Showalter’s Debut 6-3

W – Jeremy Guthrie (5-11)     L – Francisco Rodriguez (0-2)

The Buck Showalter era gets under way with a very well played 6-3 victory. Jeremy Guthrie came out throwing 96 mph heat with tons of movement and I thought he might pitch a shutout until he gave up a two run homer to Howie Kendrick in the 5th inning. He also gave up a run in the 7th but other than that he was on top of his game yet again. He pitched 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts. He was helped by his defense on a couple of occasions, notably Felix Pie making a few nice running grabs that saved some trouble. The players looked like they were trying to impress their new manager and it paid off. After the Angels took a 2-0 lead the Orioles came back in the bottom of the inning and scored one of their own on back to back doubles by Felix Pie and Matt Wieters. Wieters also had a pair of singles and a walk in the game. After Ty Wiggington walked in the 6th inning Luke Scott gave us the lead with his 19th homerun of the season. He also doubled. Pie singled and Wieters was intentionally walked to set up Josh Bell’s first double of his major league career which also gave him his first two RBI of his career. We added an insurance run in the 8th when Adam Jones walked, moved to second on an errant pick off attempt, and scored on Wieters’ single. Mike Gonzalez threw 1.2 scoreless innings in the 8th and start of the 9th before Alfredo Simon got the final out. I liked how Showalter managed the bullpen and I loved his quotes from the post game press conference as well as all the stuff since he was hired. Hes going to be great for this club.

Player of the game: Matt Wieters – 3-3, R, 2 RBI, BB, double (11) (.253 AVG)

Brian Matusz (3-11, 5.46) tries to keep the good vibes going tonight against Ervin Santana (10-7, 3.65) and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim California.
