O’s End Series With 4-1 Loss

W – Jeanmar Gomez (3-0)     L – Kevin Millwood (2-12)     SV – Chris Perez (14)

The Orioles lost their second game under Buck Showalter last night in large part because we couldn’t get anything going against the rookie Jeanmar Gomez and then the Cleveland bullpen really shut us down. We only had six hits in the game and our only run came on a Ty Wiggington RBI single after a Josh Bell double. The only other hits were singles from Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Felix Pie, and Matt Wieters. Kevin Millwood started and pitched pretty well, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits and a walk over 7 innings. He only struck out one batter but its still nice to see him pitching better of late. Jason Berken started the 8th inning but was removed with two outs after giving up an unearned run on two hits. Bell’s fielding error kept the O’s from keeping it at 3-1. Mark Hendrickson came in and struck out Shin-Soo Choo to record the final out. This was the least inspiring performance from the team since Showalter took over and it’ll be interesting to see if they bounce right back or go into a funk.

Player of the game: Josh Bell – 1-3, R, double (2) (.218 AVG)

The Orioles head into Tampa Bay for a weekend series against the Rays. Jeremy Guthrie (6-11, 4.04) goes against James Shields (10-10, 4.91) in the opener tonight.
