O’s Shut Out Rays 5-0

W – Jeremy Guthrie (7-11)     L – James Shields (10-11)

I guess it doesn’t matter who hes pitching against or where at for Jeremy Guthrie because hes been lights out every time out since the all-star break. That continued last night with 6 scoreless innings. He didn’t have his best control as he walked 4 batters but he only gave up 2 hits and struck out 3 batters. Koji Uehara pitched two scoreless innings with a strikeout to keep the Rays off the board. Hes been our best reliever since the all-star break. Mike Gonzalez hasn’t been too shabby either, he pitched a scoreless 9th with a walk and two strikeouts to complete the shut out. The O’s jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Adam Jones tripled in Ty Wiggington and Luke Scott who had each singled. Felix Pie followed with an RBI double. He would also single and double later in the game and had a stolen base. Josh Bell singled in Cesar Izturis who had doubled and Luke Scott hit a solo homerun, his 22nd, for the other two runs. It was another well played game, this time against a serious playoff contender in Tampa Bay. Buck Showalter has instilled a confidence and efficiency in this team that hasn’t been seen in years.

Player of the game: Luke Scott – 3-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, HR (22) (.296 AVG)

Game two is on FOX at four o’clock this afternoon with Brian Matusz (4-11, 5.08) pitching along side Andy Sonnanstine (2-1, 3.98) for the Rays.
