O’s Hold On 8-7 To Win Series

W – Alfredo Simon (4-2)     L – Dan Wheeler (2-2)     SV – Koji Uehara (6)

– Chris Tillman made his return to the major leagues by holding the Rays to 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks over 5.1 innings with 4 strikeouts. Two of the six hits were homeruns and two more were triples.
– Jim Johnson finished the 6th inning but not before giving up four hits and allowing two runs on a homerun by BJ Upton.
– After the Orioles took a three run lead in the bottom of the 6th, Mike Gonzalez gave two runs right back on a homerun by Rocco Baldelli.
– Alfredo Simon earned the win by pitching a clean 8th inning. The official scorer rewarded him the win since Johnson and Gonzalez weren’t very effective.
– Koji Uehara picked up his 6th save and redeemed himself from his outing the night before, having given up back to back homeruns. He struck out two batters in a perfect 9th.
– The Orioles jumped out to an eraly 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brian Roberts singled, stole second base, and scored on Nick Markakis’ single. Corey Patterson hit a sacrifice fly after walks to Luke Scott and Felix Pie.
– Two more came in the bottom of the 3rd when Patterson hit a two run homer after another Pie walk.
– The O’s repsnded immediately after Tampa Bay’s big inning with four runs in the bottom of the 6th. Craig Tatum and Cesar Izturis walked and Josh Bell hit an RBI single. Roberts and Markakis each followed with RBI singles of their own and Scott hit a sacrifice fly after Ty Wiggington walked to load the bases.

Player of the game: Brian Roberts – 2-4, 2 R, RBI, BB (.269 AVG)

Its off to New York to play the Yankees. Its a day game today with the holiday, Brian Matusz (7-12, 4.72) goes up against AJ Burnett (10-12, 5.15).
