Bullpen Help Arrives

The Orioles have activated RHP David Hernandez from the disabled list, recalled LHP Troy Patton from AAA Norfolk and LHP Pedro Viola from AA Bowie.

Hernandez returns from his sprained MCL injury after a few weeks of rest and two rehab outings. For AA Bowie he pitched 2 innings without allowing a run, allowing one hit and striking out 3 batters. Before his injury Hernandez was establishing himself as a late inning relief pitcher. Prior to going on the disabled list he was 5-8 with a 4.52 ERA over 69.2 innings with 60 strikeouts and 37 walks. He’ll return to his previous role but might be eased into it with a few middle inning appearances. Troy Patton will make his third trip to Baltimore this year, although the next inning he throws will be his first. He wasn’t used in his first two promotions but he did pitch better after returning to AAA Norfolk. On the season he was 8-11 with a 4.43 ERA over 136 innings with 89 strikeouts and 43 walks but he has a 3.46 ERA over his last 10 starts. I’ll be interested to see what he can do out of the bullpen for us. I’m surprised Pedro Viola got the call over Dennis Sarfate but I’m guessing they want to see what they have in him since hes on the 40 man roster. There are sure to be some acquisitions in the offseason and theres a good chance he’ll be a roster casualty when that happens. He struggled mightily at AAA Norfolk to start the year with a 17.65 ERA over 8.2 innings with 8 strikeouts and 10 walks but did better after being demoted to AA Bowie. He went 3-4 with a 3.59 ERA over 62.2 innings with 64 strikeouts and 19 walks. I don’t expect him to be good enough to make the team next year but we’ll see what he can do in mop up duty.
