O’s Keep Rollin’ With 5-3 Victory

W – Jeremy Guthrie (10-13)     L – Max Scherzer (10-10)     SV – Koji Uehara (9)

– Jeremy Guthrie has been one of the best pitchers in baseball in the second half and that continued last night as he blanked the Tigers over 7 innings, holding them to 5 hits and a walk with 4 strikeouts. Since the all-star break Guthrie is 7-3 with a 2.29 ERA over 11 starts with 46 strikeouts and 13 walks over 78.2 innings.
– Matt Albers came in for the 8th inning with the Orioles winning 4-0 but he gave up three runs on four hits to bring the Tigers back within one run. It was the first outing Albers had given up a run in since August 14th.
– Koji Uehara pitched a perfect 9th with two strikeouts as he continues his impressive work as closer.
– The O’s had 16 hits but only scored five runs, four in the top of the 6th inning. Back to back doubles from Adam Jones and Felix Pie scored the first run. Josh Bell singled and then Cesar Iztris tripled to score two more. Ty Wiggington’s sacrifice fly closed out the scoring in the inning.
– We scored an insurance run in the 9th when Matt Wieters doubled with two outs, Jones was intentionally walked, and Pie singled to score Wieters.
– Jones was four for four with a walk. Pie and Brian Roberts each had three hits. Wieters had two hits and everyone else in the lineup other than Wiggington had one. Wiggington walked in the game.

Player of the game: Adam Jones – 4-4, R, BB, double (21) (.283 AVG)

The Orioles will go for the sweep this afternoon. On paper it doesn’t look good with Chris Tillman (1-4, 7.42) matching up with Justin Verlander (15-8, 3.53).
