O’s Sweep Doubleheader 10-6, 2-1

Game 1: Orioles 10, Tigers 6

W – Chris Tillman (2-5)     L – Jeremy Bonderman (8-10)

– Chris Tillman gave the Orioles a great performance to remember over the offseason in his final start of the year. He gave up a solo homerun in the 2nd inning but that was it over 7 innings. 3 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts later he was out of the game and in line for the win.
– The bullpen tried to let the Tigers back into the game but they ran out of time. Mark Hendrickson could only get one out before giving up 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. Matt Albers finished the last 1.2 innings but not before giving up a run of his own on 3 hits although he did strikeout 3 batters.
– The Orioles went hitless over the first three innings but then exploded for nine runs over the next two. All 10 runs in the game were driven in by three Orioles – Felix Pie, Adam Jones, and Craig Tatum.
– Pie had an RBI single and two run triple, Jones had a 3 RBI double and RBI single, and Tatum hit a two run double and RBI single.
– Nick Markakis singled and walked and Corey Patterson singled for the only other Oriole hits.
– The Orioles grounded into three double plays but made up for it by going 6-10 with runners in scoring position.

Player of the game: Adam Jones – 3-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2 doubles (25) (.283 AVG)

Game 2: Orioles 2, Tigers 1

W – Jeremy Guthrie (11-14)     L – Rick Porcello (10-12)     SV – Koji Uehara (12)

– Jeremy Guthrie followed Kevin Millwood and Chris Tillman’s lead by throwing an excellent game of his own in his last start of the season. Guthrie topped them both only allowing 2 hits and a walk over 8 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts to earn the win.
– Koji Uehara got the save but it was a little scary. He gave up a solo homerun to Don Kelly and another hit after that but closed the door, striking out two batters in the process.
– The Orioles had 13 hits in game two yet somehow only managed to score 2 runs. Nick Markakis hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 3rd inning but the rest were all singles.
– Julio Lugo singled in Robert Andino in the 7th inning for the other run. Andino was 4-4 in the game after going 0-2 in game one with a walk and HBP.
– Adam Jones and Brandon Snyder each singled twice. Jake Fox, Josh Bell, and Markakis also singled.
– With a sweep of the double header the Orioles now have more wins this year than they did in 2009, which is amazing with the way the season was going until Buck Showalter entered the picture. Showalter has more wins since he took the job than the rest of the coaches that managed the Orioles combined in 2010.

Player of the game: Jeremy Guthrie – 8 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, BB, 5 K, W (11-14) (3.83 ERA)

Brian Matusz (9-12, 4.40) will try to end his season in style as well tonight in game three against Armando Galarraga (4-8, 4.62) and the Tigers.
