More Splendid Pitching In 2-1 Win

W – Brian Matusz (10-12)     L – Armando Galarraga (4-9)     SV – Koji Uehara (13)

– Brian Matusz got the memo. He picked up right where the other starters left off with their final starts of the season. Matusz set a career high of 9 strikeouts over 6 innings, only allowing a run on 2 hits and 2 walks. Brandon Inge’s solo homerun in the 2nd inning was Detroit’s only run.
– The back end of the bullpen continued its success as well. Mike Gonzalez struck out 2 batters in a scoreless 7th inning, Jim Johnson pitched a perfect 8th, and Koji Uehara got the save with a scoreless 9th.
– The Orioles only had three hits themselves. Nick Markakis tied the game with a solo homerun in the bottom of the 4th inning. Thats back to back games with a homerun for Markakis, giving him 12 on the season.
– The go ahead run came in the bottom of the 5th when Felix Pie doubled, advanced to third on Ty Wiggington’s groundout, and scored on a Matt Wieters sacrifice fly that just missed being a homerun.
– The only other hit was Corey Patterson’s double. Robert Andino walked.

Player of the game: Brian Matusz – 6 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 9 K, W (10-12) (4.30 ERA)

The season comes to a close today. Brad Bergesen (8-11, 5.02) will try to end the season on a high note against Phil Coke (7-5, 3.57) and the Tigers.
