Matusz to DL; Britton Gets His Chance

The Orioles have placed LHP Brian Matusz on the 15 day disabled list with a strained intercostal muscle in his back. LHP Zach Britton has been recalled from AAA Norfolk to take his place.

Matusz has had some really bad luck lately. First he gets hit on the bicep on a line drive up the middle in a simulated game and now he hurts his back and has to miss three to six weeks. This is a huge loss for the birds as Brian was our best pitcher over the last two months last year and he was expected to take the next step forward in his development. Thats been put on hold for now. Hopefully he heals quickly and comes back closer to the three weeks as opposed to six. He was given a cortisone shot to help make that happen. The other bad news in this is that the Orioles have to forfeit the chance to get an extra year of eligibility from top prospect Britton. With Justin Duchscherer on the DL already and no other real options to take the spot in the rotation Andy MacPhail was almost forced to call on the rookie. Its not all bad. Britton will be making his major league debut and thats exciting. Hes going to be a big part of how well this team does over the next several years. He gets to start his career in about the lowest key stadium in the sport so that could help lessen the pressure. I can’t wait to see what the kids got, I just wish we had the good fortune of not needing him this early.
