Britton Shines As O’s Sweep Rays 5-1

W – Zach Britton (1-0)     L – Wade Davis (0-1)

– Britton made his much anticipated debut and didn’t disappoint, going six strong innings and only allowing one run. He was around the plate all day and despite walking three batters his command was good. He struck out six batters and kept the momentum going for the team and especially the pitching staff. Hes proved that he can get major league hitters out so his nerves shouldn’t come into play too much from here on.
– Jason Berken struck out the side in his first appearance of the season in the 7th inning. Jim Johnson tossed a scoreless 8th and Josh Rupe a scoreless 9th making his Oriole debut.
– The offense woke up a little bit later in the game today. We put together a three run 7th with five hits. Matt Wieters and Adam Jones hit back to back singles, Wieters scored on Mark Reynold’s double, and Jones and Reynolds scored on JJ Hardy’s double. Wieters and Jones had two singles each. Nick Markakis also singled but Hardy was thrown out at the plate.
– The first run came in the 1st inning. Brian Roberts singled and Derrek Lee walked before Wieters blooped in an RBI single. Reynolds hit another RBI double to pad the lead in the 9th inning.
– Felix Pie also had a single in place of the injured Luke Scott. Scott is dealing with a strained groin which is why he came out of the game last night. Hes supposed to miss a couple games and is expected be back for Wednesday’s game.

Player of the game: Zach Britton – 6 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 BB, 6 K, W (1-0) (1.50 ERA)

The Orioles head home for opening day at Camden Yards after a sweep of the 2010 division champions. The Tigers are in town for a three game series. Rick Porcello (0-0, -.–) goes for Detroit against Jake Arrieta (0-0, -.–) for the birds.
