O’s Win Pitcher’s Duel, 3-1

W – Jeremy Accardo (1-0)     L – James Shields (0-1)     SV – Kevin Gregg (1)

– The starting pitchers look like they came to play so far this season. Chris Tillman followed up Guthrie’s masterpiece with six shutout, hitless innings of his own. He threw too many pitches so he didn’t get a chance to try to finish his no hit bid, but he pitched very well. The biggest thing for him was he was able to throw his curve ball for strikes.
– Two huge defensive plays allowed the O’s to take this game. First in the 7th inning Felix Pie threw a perfect strike to nail BJ Upton at the plate for the final out of the inning. Pie was just inserted into the game as a defensive replacement for Luke Scott.
– The other play was Nick Markakis’ leaping catch at the wall to end the game. If he doesn’t catch it two runners would’ve scored and the game would’ve at least went into extra innings. The ball looked like it was a homerun off the bat.
– After Brian Roberts hit the triple in game one to put the birds over the top he did it again last night with a three run homer off of lefty Jake McGee. Roberts usually hits better from the left side of the plate so its good to see both his triple and homerun come as a right handed batter.
– The other hits were all singles. Two from Derrek Lee and one a piece from Vladimir Guerrero and Mark Reynolds. JJ Hardy and Markakis each walked.

Player of the game: Chris Tillman – 6 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K (0.00 ERA)

The Orioles go for the sweep today with Zach Britton (0-0, -.–) making his major league debut. Fresh off a contract extension, Wade Davis (0-0, -.–) makes his first start of the year.
