O’s Lose 5th Straight 8-2

W – Justin Masterson (3-0)     L – Zach Britton (2-1)

– Zach Britton had alot of pressure coming into this game. The Orioles were coming off four straight losses and he was supposed to right the ship after two great starts to start his career. Thats alot to ask of a rookie but he gave it a good try. One bad inning cost him, the 3rd, when he gave up 6 hits and 4 runs. Most of the hits weren’t hit hard (sacrifice bunt turned single, broken bat blooper, etc.) but the damage was done. Britton rebounded nicely, only giving up a solo homerun in the 6th. He struck out 6 batters and only walked one. It was a learning experience for the young lefty.
– Josh Rupe came in for the 7th and pretty much made it impossible for the Orioles to make a comeback, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk while only recording one out. Jeremy Accardo finished the inning, walking one and striking out one. Koji Uehara pitched a perfect 8th.
– The offense was again shut down, this time without an extra base hit. Luke Scott and Mark Reynolds each had RBI singles. Masterson was getting a ton of ground balls and the O’s just couldn’t square up on his pitches. Brian Roberts and Derrek Lee had two singles a piece while Adam Jones and Cesar Izturis each had one.
– The Orioles are in a funk right now but it only takes one game to snap out of it. This was an ugly game and maybe our worst team effort of the season. The offense needs to start living up to pre-season expectations so there isn’t as much pressure on the young arms until we can get healthy.

Player of the game: Derrek Lee – 2-3, R, BB (.227 AVG)

Game two of the series will convene tomorrow afternoon. Opening day starter Jeremy Guthrie (1-1, 0.64) will face his former team and Josh Tomlin (2-0, 2.63).
