O’s Look Dead, Lose Again 8-3

W – Josh Tomlin (3-0)     L – Jeremy Guthrie (1-2)

– Guthrie didn’t have anything yesterday. Maybe hes still recovering from the after effects of pneumonia and the two hour rain delay didn’t help but he wasn’t up to his usual par. He gave up two runs in the 2nd inning and four more in the 3rd putting the Orioles in a deep early hole. He was able to get through the 5th without allowing any more runs so I’ll give him credit for that. Overall he went 5 innings allowing 6 runs on 10 hits and a walk with 2 strikeouts.
– Mike Gonzalez didn’t help matters by giving up a two run homer in the 7th after the Orioles had cut the lead to three. Hes been terrible so far this year. Chris Jakubauskas pitched a scoreless 6th and Jason Berken pitched a scoreless 8th.
– Maybe its just because we’re on a 6 game losing streak but it seems like theres no life to this team anymore. They’ve been playing in some miserable weather but so has the other team. It just seems like we’re just going through the motions and again one win probably changes that whole perception but its hard to be positive on such a down swing.
– Jake Fox was my player of the game for hitting a solo homerun and a triple but he didn’t help anything behind the plate. His defense back there is atrocious, he let two balls go to the backstop that any decent catcher would’ve caught. Craig Tatum is a phone call away and I’m willing to bet they make that call soon.
– Luke Scott hit his first homerun of the season but the rest of our hits were all singles. Robert Andino had two, Brian Roberts had an RBI to go along with his, and Derrek Lee, Vladimir Guerrero, Adam Jones, and Mark Reynolds each had one. Andino and Reynolds also walked.
– The offense needs to take some pressure off of the pitching staff after they came out of the gate throwing so well. We’re not jumping ahead early in any of these games we’re losing. The extra base hits are alot lower than they should be too. Its mostly all established players so I’m not too worried but its hard to win like this.

Player of the game: Jake Fox – 2-4, 2 R, RBI, triple (1), HR (1) (.182 AVG)

The Orioles will try to avoid the sweep today. Brad Bergesen (0-1, 3.17) makes his return to the rotation, he’ll be countered by Fausto Carmona (0-2, 6.11) for the Indians.
