O’s Force Extras But Lose 6-3

W – Boone Logan (1-1)     L – Jason Berken (0-1)

– Jake Arrieta had a great game and is showing signs of reaching his potential. Unfortunately he and the Orioles were down 2-0 after four pitches. Derek Jeter singled on the first pitch, then Curtis Granderson homered three pitches later. After that Arrieta was able to settle down, only giving up one more run in the 5th inning. He struck out a career high 9 batters over 6 innings, allowing 5 hits and walking 3. Our starting rotation is going to be fun to watch after Brian Matusz returns in mid May.
– The bullpen kept the Yankees scoreless for four innings until the 11th inning. Koji Uehara, Jim Johnson, Kevin Gregg, and Jeremy Accardo each pitched scoreless innings. Accardo got help from a great throw from Adam Jones and tag from Matt Wieters at the plate to end the 10th. Accardo started the 11th and ran a full count on Robinson Cano before the rain came and delayed the game.
– Jason Berken came in after the delay and gave up a double to Cano to start things off. It got frustrating from there with a bunch of infield singles and errors leading to three runs and effectively dashing our hopes of completing the comeback.
– Freddy Garcia shut out the Orioles over 6 innings and we didn’t get on the board until Mark Reynolds broke out of a 0-22 slump by hitting a two run homer in the bottom of the 7th. In the 9th Brian Roberts tied the game with an RBI double off of Mariano Rivera. Adam Jones scored but Robert Andino was thrown out at the plate after pinch running for Jake Fox, who singled. It was an incredibly close play at the plate and it looked like Andino got his foot under the tag, but the throw beat him to the plate which usually leads to an out call. The Yankees executed the relay perfectly or else we would’ve won the game.
– The offense continued its woes although there were some hits. Jones singled and walked twice. Luke Scott singled twice. Nick Markakis and Vladimir Guerrero each singled. Matt Wieters drew a walk.

Player of the game: Jake Arrieta – 6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 9 K (4.94 ERA)

The Orioles need to start getting some wins before things get too bad. They’re 2-11 over their last 13 games and the regrouped Red Sox are coming to town for a three game series starting tomorrow. Game one features Zach Britton (3-1, 3.16) against Clay Buchholz (1-2, 5.31).
