O’s Mail One In, Lose 9-1

W – Bruce Chen (4-1)     L – Chris Tillman (1-4)

– What an ugly game. Just a terrible performance from pretty much everyone involved on the Orioles side. Chris Tillman got lit up from the get go and ended up giving the Royals 8 runs on 10 hits and a walk over just 3.2 innings. He managed to strike out 3 batters, but also balked and threw a wild pitch. I don’t know how much longer you can keep sending him out there. I’d say until either Brian Matusz or Alfredo Simon is ready, whichever comes first.
– Its sad that the mop up man is the player of the game but that was the case today. Josh Rupe came in and held the Royals scoreless over 3.2 innings, striking out a pair of hitters. It was his best performance as an Oriole, getting seven ground ball outs. Clay Rapada got the last two outs but not before giving up a solo homerun to Melky Cabrera.
– Surprisingly the Orioles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Nick Markakis singled, Vladimir Guerrero was intentionally walked, and Adam Jones drove in Markakis with a single. Markakis had a pair of hits in the game. At least he seems to be snapping out of his long slump. Mark Reynolds is heating up a little too, he had a single and a walk in the game. Robert Andino’s single was the only other hit in the game.

Player of the game: Josh Rupe – 3.2 IP, H, 0 ER, BB, 2 K (5.65 ERA)

The Orioles head home to play the red hot Rays and James Shields (2-1, 2.14) tomorrow night. Our rookie of the year candidate Zach Britton (5-1, 2.63) looks to get everything back on track.
