Bullpen Change

The Orioles have optioned RHP Jason Berken to AAA Norfolk and activated RHP Alfredo Simon from the restricted list. SS Cesar Izturis was moved to the 60 day disabled list to make room for Simon on the 40 man roster.

After dealing with all his off the field issues in the Dominican Republic and building up his arm with a makeshift spring training, Simon has made it back to the Orioles. He pitched well for AA Bowie over three starts going 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA over 16 innings with 17 strikeouts and 5 walks. He’ll be inserted into the bullpen as a long and middle reliever. He has a dark cloud hanging over his head as hes supposed to return to the DR for the trial of the New Years shooting in the coming months but theres no indication when that will be exactly. For now the Orioles are hoping they have an arm they can rely on. Simon has lost 30 pounds since he was last with the team and should have plenty of motivation to do well. The man he is replacing, Berken, has been struggling since the third week of the season. He heads to AAA Norfolk after posting a 7.94 ERA over 17 innings with 17 strikeouts and 10 walks. Buck Showalter said he’ll start while hes there, I’m not sure on the reasoning for that unless they just want to give him more innings to try and figure out whats wrong. Hopefully it doesn’t take him too long and he can return to how he was pitching when the season started because the O’s really need to improve the pitching out of the bullpen.
