O’s Win Beltway Series 2-1

W – Jim Johnson (3-1)     L – Jordan Zimmermann (2-5)     SV – Kevin Gregg (8)

– Don’t look now but Chris Tillman has had three straight good outings. He hasn’t gotten far into the games and isn’t dominating but hes shown marked improvement. Hes getting his curve ball and changeup over for strikes and has his fastball up in the 90-92 mph range. Players develop at different speeds and Tillman is no different. I’m not saying hes turned a corner or won’t have rough outing going forward but I’m encouraged that hes not a complete bust. Hes still the youngest pitcher on the staff at 23. He did a good job of getting out of jams yesterday allowing a run on 6 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts over 5 innings.
– The bullpen combined to shut out the Nationals from then on. Jeremy Accardo, Jim Johnson, and Koji Uehara each pitched scoreless innings to set up Kevin Gregg to close out the game. He walked a batter but the game ended on a strike ’em out, throw ’em out double play – the second time in the game that happened. Matt Wieters has now thrown out 13 of 27 baserunners attempting to steal.
– The offense didn’t do much of anything but with one swing of the bat the whole game turned around. Nick Markakis singled to lead off the 7th inning and Vladimir Guerrero lined a homerun to left field on an 0-2 pitch to give the O’s the lead. The Orioles are getting everything they wanted from Vlad for the month of May after a slow start.
– Mark Reynolds hit his 11th double of the season, Luke Scott singled and walked, and JJ Hardy and Robert Andino each walked.

Player of the game: Vladimir Guerrero – 1-4, 2 Run HR (5) (.309 AVG)

The Orioles get the day off today before Kansas City comes to town for a three game series. Zach Britton (5-2, 2.14) faces off against another rookie left handed pitcher, Danny Duffy (0-0, 4.50), in game one.
