Bullpen Blows It In 4-2 Loss

W – Tommy Hunter (1-0)     L – Jim Johnson (5-2)     SV – Neftali Feliz (17)

– Mitch Atkins made his first major league start and first appearance as an Oriole last night and did a good job, holding the Rangers to one run over six innings. He gave up eight hits but didn’t walk a batter and got the outs when they mattered. He struck out four batters. He did better than any of our other starters have done recently so I think its safe to say he’ll remain in the rotation a little while longer. Jim Johnson has been great this season but he blew it last night. He walked the first two batters in the 7th inning and eventually allowed three runs to come across the plate. Nolan Reimold’s throwing error let the last one in. Jason Berken pitched a perfect 8th inning but it was just another way for the Orioles to lose a game.
– JJ Hardy led off the game with his 13th homerun to give us a very quick lead. Nick Markakis and Adam Jones followed with singles but Vladimir Guerrero grounded into a double play and Mark Reynolds struck out to end the threat. Matt Wieters hit a solo homerun in the 4th inning to give us a 2-0 lead but that was all the offense we could muster. Markakis, Jones, Guerrero, and Reimold each had two singles and Wieters added two singles of his own to go with his homerun. We continue to be monumentally bad with runners in scoring position, going 0-6 last night.

Player of the game: Matt Wieters – 3-4, solo HR (8) (.269 AVG)

One more game in Texas to see if theres a new way for the O’s to lose. Jeremy Guthrie (3-10, 3.93) is pitching so don’t expect much offense. The Rangers will send Alexi Ogando (8-3, 2.86) to the mound.
