Another Night, Another (10-4) Loss

W – Andrew Miller (3-0)     L – Jake Arrieta (9-6)

– Only three more games until the all-star break… Arrieta was the latest Oriole starter to get rocked. He was lucky to escape some jams in the first two innings but couldn’t in the other innings he pitched in. He gave up two homeruns en route to five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks over 4.1 innings. He only struck out one batter. To be fair the 3rd inning got started on a terrible call at first base. Arrieta received a throw from Derrek Lee and stepped on the bag with his heel but the umpire called the runner safe. The flood gates opened from there.
– The homeruns were just getting started.. Jason Berken gave one up, and two runs over two innings. Pedro Viola came in, gave up back to back to back homeruns, then a walk before being pulled from the game. The bus is already started for his return trip to Bowie. Chris Jakubauskas pitched the last 1.2 innings without allowing a run. Thats great and all, but now hes eliminated from starting Saturday’s game. I’m guessing Alfredo Simon will get the nod instead.
– Matt Wieters didn’t get a hit yet he was the player of the game. Thats what kind of night it was. He did walk three times and steal the first base of his career. Adam Jones hit an RBI single, JJ Hardy had a sacrifice fly, Derrek Lee an RBI groundout, and our other run scored when Vladimir Guerrero tapped into a double play. He also doubled in the game. Robert Andino singled twice. Nick Markakis singled and walked. Hardy, Mark Reynolds, and Nolan Reimold each singled as well.

Player of the game: Matt Wieters – 0-1, 3 BB, SB (1) (.268 AVG)

Zach Britton (6-6, 3.47) looks to end his streak of starts without a win as well as the O’s current skid. He’ll have to do so against Josh Beckett (7-3, 2.12) whos pitching about as well as he ever has.
