O’s Brawl In 10-3 Loss

W – Josh Beckett (8-3)     L – Zach Britton (6-7)

– Just another ugly game in a long string of them. Britton was the latest starting pitcher to get bombed. He couldn’t even make it out of the 1st inning giving up eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and two walks. There were three plays that should’ve been made behind him but only one was called an error. The team was playing scared. It was an embarrassing moment for an Oriole fan. Brad Bergesen replaced Britton and finished the inning. He ended up pitching three scoreless before getting knocked out of the game by a line drive back up the middle. Bergesen is like a human target out there, this time getting hit in the forearm. X-rays were negative and he thinks he’ll be able to avoid the DL.
– Chris Jakubauskas replaced Bergesen and finished the inning plus the 5th, giving up a solo homerun in the process. Mike Gonzalez and Koji Uehara each pitched a scoreless inning before things got interesting in the bottom of the 8th. Kevin Gregg gave up a run but more importantly started a brawl. He was pitching David Ortiz inside after he had hit a three run homer and also the line drive that hurt Bergesen earlier. Ortiz took exception and had words with Gregg before order was restored. That didn’t last long though because after Ortiz hit a fly ball to center field, Gregg told him to run to first base in a colorful way. He was thrown out of the game as Ortiz charged the mound, both players throwing wild punches at each other. Jim Johnson was also ejected from the game during the ensuing melee. It was good to see some fire, we can only hope it wakes this team up.
– Offensively we were our usual self, some extra base hits but poor with runners in scoring position. Derrek Lee hit a solo homerun and also doubled. Nick Markakis and Adam Jones each had RBI singles. Jones singled twice in the game. Matt Wieters doubled. Robert Andino singled and walked. Vladimir Guerrero singled and Felix Pie walked twice.

Player of the game: Derrek Lee – 2-4, double (11), solo HR (8) (.233 AVG)

These teams are still not happy with each other I’m sure and we’ve got two games left in the series. Alfredo Simon (1-1, 4.64) gets the start for the O’s against John Lackey (5-8, 7.47) who has struggled mightily this season.
