O’s Finally Win, 6-5

W – Alfredo Simon (2-2)     L – Carlos Carrasco (8-7)     SV – Mike Gonzalez (1)

– Simon gave the Orioles the best pitching performace from a starter in a long time. He only gave up two runs on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts over seven innings. The only inning where he had any problems was the 6th but Buck Showalter sent him back out for the 7th anyway and it paid off, Cleveland went 1-2-3. Simon has to fly back to the Dominican Republic in a couple days for more court proceedings. He should feel secure with his spot on the roster after this performance.
– Koji Uehara did what he does, striking out two over a perfect inning. This was after working two innings the night before. He looks better than he ever has. It’ll be interesting to see if we hold on to him or trade before the July 31st deadline as he should be one of our most valuable assets. Kevin Gregg came in with the O’s winning by four and he didn’t have anything working for him. He gave up three runs on a hit and three walks before Showalter took him out of the game. Fire starter Mike Gonzalez was called on to get the final out and he did it, earning his first save of the season.
– The offense was consistently scoring throughout the game. Adam Jones hit a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning to give us an early lead. JJ Hardy doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a fly out. Derrek Lee had an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th, Nick Markakis hit a solo homerun in the 6th, and Jones and Felix Pie each hit doubles to bring in three more runs in the 8th. Markakis also had a pair of doubles in the game. Mark Reynolds doubled and walked, Nolan Reimold walked, and Matt Wieters walked twice. The win snapped a nine game losing streak.

Player of the game: Nick Markakis – 3-4, 3 R, RBI, 2 doubles (13), HR (8) (.297 AVG)

The O’s can split the series with a win today. Mitch Atkins (0-0, 8.22) matches up against Jeanmar Gomez (0-1, 4.91) and the Indians.
