Offense Asleep Again In 6-1 Loss

W – Ervin Santana (5-8)     L – Alfredo Simon (2-3)     SV – Hisanori Takahashi (1)

– All of a sudden the Orioles are getting good performances from the starting pitching but in typical Oriole fashion now the offense has fallen into a slump. After being two hit on Wednesday, we could only manage three hits last night. Our only run came in the bottom of the 8th. Mark Reynolds walked, Felix Pie singled, and JJ Hardy singled to bring Reynolds home. The first and only other hit of the game was a Blake Davis double in the 6th inning.
– Alfredo Simon pitched his second straight quality start, taking a shutout into the 7th inning. It wasn’t always clean but he was able to escape a few jams. In the top of the 4th Simon botched a routine double play ball to load the bases with one out but was able to get a pop up and a ground out to get out of the jam without allowing a run. He tired in the 7th as his pitch count got close to 100, not to mention the temperature which was over 100. He gave up two doubles to score a run and was replaced by Jason Berken with two outs. Berken gave up a double of his own to allow the inherited runner to score and was taken out of the game. Mike Gonzalez finished the inning and got the first two outs of the 8th with Mark Worrell striking out the only batter he faced. Kevin Gregg took a one run game and made it completely out of reach by giving up a grand slam in the 9th. An error by Derrek Lee didn’t help, but he still didn’t pitch good in his first game since serving a three game suspension.

Player of the game: Alfredo Simon – 6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 K, L (2-3) (4.08 ERA)

The offense will try to get back in gear tonight against Joel Pineiro (5-4, 4.58) with Brad Bergesen (1-6, 5.76) starting for us.
