Pitching Holds On For 3-2 Win

W – Brad Bergesen (2-6)     L – Joel Pineiro (5-5)     SV – Kevin Gregg (16)

– Bergesen started off shaky giving up a two run homer to Vernon Wells in the top of the 1st inning but settled down after that. He didn’t allow another run after that and was taken out after the 6th inning with only 80 pitches. Maybe the 100 degree heat was getting to him but I would’ve let him go out for the 7th. His ground out to fly out ratio was 8-1. Regardless, his line was 6 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Another thing I don’t like is using more relievers than you have to. It worked out this time with Jim Johnson pitching a scoreless 7th, Koji Uehara a perfect 8th, and Kevin Gregg a scoreless 9th to hold on for the win.
– The offense had plenty of chances to put up a big inning but still managed to score enough to win. We hit into four double plays and were only 1-6 with runners in scoring position. Adam Jones hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 4th for our first run. We took the lead in the 5th inning when Nick Markakis hit an RBI single and Jones lifted a sacrifice fly. Nolan Reimold singled and doubled. JJ Hardy singled three times. Robert Andino and Craig Tatum each singled twice. Mark Reynolds and Derrek Lee each singled once. We got back to getting our hits tonight but now we need to get some more to go for extra bases.

Player of the game: Adam Jones – 1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR (17) (.284 AVG)

In what could be his final start for the Orioles, Jeremy Guthrie (4-13, 4.35) goes for the series win tomorrow afternoon. The Angels will send rookie Tyler Chatwood (5-6, 3.71) to the mound.
